As we embark upon the 2010 World Cup, I can't help but marvel at how far the U.S. National Team has come. We went from Alexi Lalas and John Harkes as the only American Born players playing abroad in legitimate leagues, to 80% of the Squad playing in the Premier League, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, or the Eredivisie in Holland.
It's pretty awesome when you think about it. Realistically, that's one generation of soccer. Although, Generational Soccer isn't exactly the same as Familial Generation. I'm 35 Now, I distinctly remember the metamorphosis from A-League with the Maryland Bays (the top league in the United States) when I was in High school in '92...to D.C. United in the MLS in '96. There was no women's league to speak of, although Carin Gabarra and Michelle Akers-Stahl were still setting the table for Mia Hamm. So realistically I look at Generations as a 2 World Cup Span. Ideally you can keep a team nucleus together for 4 - 6 years... by the 8th year...it's a whole new slew of jokers with new moves and new ideas.
My kid is 4 year old and this blog is free...from time to time I'll come on and rant because in 2 "Soccer Generations" he'll be old enough to really care about the WC (I sure hope he still loves soccer by then). I'll really be interested to see how US soccer has developed though.....welcome to my blog World Cup 2030!!!
